The Look
Strephon kissed me in the spring,Robin in the fall,But Colin only looked at me And never kissed at all.
Strephon's kiss was lost in jest,Robin's lost in play,But the kiss in Colin's eyes Haunts me night and day.
-- Sara Teasdale
Those are the lines of the poem "The Look". I have researched this poem and I have found out that Strephon, Robin and Colin are the names that appear in the old Elizabeth love lyrics. They are actually shepherds who managed to court country maids of the uncoy sort.
For me this poem draws a line between passionate love and true love. As I have understood, Sara Teasdale uses these three characters in her poem since these three characters used to court country maids. I see the poem as, when love is passionate, feelings fade. But when love is true even without those kisses, it will stay forever. Although kiss may be a symbol of love but kiss may also be a symbol for lust. Perhaps, Strephon and Robin's kiss means not love but lust. They say that eye is the door to one's heart. Colin may have done nothing to the persona but the feelings lasted.
When I was in third year, in our Health class, our Health teacher defines love as "love is feeling that only a feeling can understand". That is very true, we donot have to explain it because we will just get confuse.
Many things we can do to express our love to somebody. For lovers, kiss maybe is an important ingredient to feel love. It is normal. But for some a simple look in the eye can lead to very magical feeling. It is such a wonder how a simple look create a complex meaning. A look can expressmillions of feelings and a hundred percent sure that it was clearly understood. Is it just the eye that does the work or is it the heart?
